With the costs of many luxury down comforters, taking good care of it becomes a priority in most cases. And although it is impossible to prevent most accidents, how should you clean your down comforter when it does get dirty?
With proper care, most any down comforter will give you years of use. The good news is that it really isn't difficult to care for them. Here are some quick tips.
1. Read the care labels on your down comforter. Many comforters will need to be dry cleaned only, while others may be cleaned in the washing machine.
If your label does state to have it dry cleaned only, be sure to follow those instructions. You will avoid possibly destroying your comforter in the washer. I've seen that happen before.
2. Home dry cleaning products may work. There are several home dry cleaning products that work well in cleaning a down comforter. They work in your clothes dryer and do a decent job as well.
3. Don't clean a down comforter more than 1-2 times a year. More frequent cleaning can damage the down and shorten the life span.
4. When washing your down comforter in the washing machine follow these guidelines:
- Be sure there are no tears in the comforter.
- Use only half of soap you normally would.
- Use the delicate setting and warm water.
